The devastating impact on the community of three recent multiple fatality crashes on Tasmania's roads has led the Road Safety Task Force (RSTF) to postpone the launch of a new campaign targeting speeding drivers.
The confronting campaign was to have been launched next week with television and newspaper advertisements, but given the similarity between the campaign and some aspects of the past week, it has been deferred.
It was felt that the timing was too close to the tragic events of 9 July - the worst day ever on Tasmania's roads.
RSTF Chairman, Paul Hogan said the crashes that caused nine fatalities were shocking enough and that now was a time for sensitivity and respect, as the community needed time to grieve and reflect.
"The campaign has been in development since May and was filmed in June ready for a July launch," Mr Hogan said.
"However, we believe that the appropriate decision is to postpone the launch and we will be guided by expert advice as to when we do launch this campaign.
"The reality of how road trauma can affect our community has been devastatingly highlighted and at this stage, no campaign will touch Tasmanians more than the overwhelming tragedy that has resulted in our road toll being at its highest for years."
