MEDIA RELEASE: 01/07/2009

Drivers who find excuses to speed are the subject of a new advertising campaign that will be filmed on the Huon Highway.

The Road Safety Task Force (RSTF) will be launching the campaign in late July and hopes it will resonate with those who speed and rationalise this behaviour because it is only just over the limit.

RSTF Chairman Paul Hogan said speeding is not only when you drive over the posted limit, but also when you are driving at a speed above what is appropriate for the conditions, such as the road, weather or traffic.

“Given our high road toll, it is obvious that drivers need a reminder to stay at or below the limit and to be aware of who is outside of their vehicle and consequently affected by their driving,” Mr Hogan said.

“This new campaign aims to change driver behaviour by focusing on the excuses drivers use each day to justify speeding and compares them to the potential outcome of their actions.

“Drivers who speed are committing a selfish act, by putting their own priorities before the safety of others.”

Filming for the campaign will be on the south bound lanes of the Huon Highway from the junction of Summerleas Road and planned for Tuesday 23 June between 10am and 2pm with expected delays of up to five minutes.
