The Road Safety Task Force (RSTF) is a joint initiative of Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources (DIER), Tasmania Police and MAIB. It was established on 1 July 1996 and started operating in October that year.

The role of the RSTF is to develop, implement and monitor an integrated public education and enforcement program which aims to contribute to the reduction of fatalities and serious injuries on Tasmanian roads. MAIB has provided funding of $3.16 million per annum (indexed) for three years from January 2009 to December 2011 to assist in achieving this.

This funding is primarily for the development of public education campaigns aimed at changing driver behaviour, and also funds 16 police officers around the state who focus on road safety. All activity is based on research, evidence and crash statistics with the key focuses being speed and drink driving. Other areas include inattention, fatigue and seatbelt compliance along with targeting various road users such as cyclists, pedestrians and motorcyclists.
